The Hubble Space Telescope was created primarily to circumvent the restrictions imposed by the earth's atmosphere. The HST was launched on April 24, 1990 with the space shuttle mission STS-31 and released from the Discovery's hold the next day. It was the first of four space telescopes planned by NASA as part of the Great Observatory program.
